The OpenVPN community gathered again for a community Hackathon in Delft, Netherlands, from November 25 to 27, 2022. While we enjoy working remotely, the Hackathon provided a welcome change of scenery and a great chance to meet in person after such a long time apart.

The OpenVPN community comprises individuals who either contribute their expertise in their own free time or are sponsored by other companies. In this case, members from Belgium, Germany, Finland, and the Netherlands came together in Delft at Fox-IT headquarters, where we hosted a previous community Hackathon in 2015.
During the Hackathon, one of our primary areas of focus was to discuss and plan the OpenVPN 2.6 release with data channel offload (DCO), a major feature we’ve worked on for nearly two years. A beta release was made available to the public shortly after the meeting in December, and the full-stable release went live in January of 2023. We continue to fine-tune this implementation across Windows, Linux, and FreeBSD.

And for an in-depth look at DCO, see this presentation from Antonio Quartulli, a Principal Engineer at OpenVPN: Pushing OpenVPN Down the Stack: Data Channel Offload (DCO). Quartulli’s talk on this concept of kernel-accelerated data processing was featured at Netdev 0x16 in Lisbon in October 2022.

It was wonderful to be back at Fox-IT again, and we appreciate them allowing the use of their meeting space for this important work. The community would also like to thank all contributors for their time and hard work. OpenVPN 2.6.0 and all the improvements it brings were made a reality because of your efforts. We are grateful for you!
We look forward to making the Hackathon gatherings an annual event once again, bringing new and exciting improvements to OpenVPN year after year.
