Customer Success Story: Strengthening Remote Access with Access Server
By Mollie Horne
A secure, easy-to-manage alternative to passwords for a distributed team.
Security first — even when your workforce is everywhere
In today’s hybrid and remote world, secure connectivity is table stakes for any tech-forward organization. For one technology services company — a provider of custom software solutions serving clients across industries — ensuring secure access to internal resources was essential to protect both their work and their clients’ data.
Headquartered near Salt Lake City, the company’s remote workforce connects from across the U.S. and beyond. What started as basic remote access quickly became a security concern: the team was relying on usernames and passwords to grant VPN access, and even with policies and training in place, weak passwords were putting critical internal systems at risk. They knew they needed a better way — one that could authenticate users more reliably and support modern access control requirements.
That’s where Access Server came in.
The challenge: move beyond passwords without complexity
The team had already built a bastion host for access to internal servers, but without a scalable VPN like Access Server, they still relied on fragile shared usernames and passwords. Even with the best training, some employees chose weak credentials — and the company wanted a solution that would strengthen trust in identity and access control.
They also needed a way to:
-
Securely connect remote employees to both corporate and client infrastructure.
-
Apply consistent access controls regardless of employee location.
-
Protect endpoints with multi-factor authentication — not just passwords.
-
Enable secure connectivity without exposing cloud resources publicly.
Simply put: they wanted secure access that was easier to manage and harder for attackers to bypass.

See Which One is Right for YouThe solution: Access Server deployed in the cloud
The company chose Access Server for its simplicity, flexibility, and security.
They deployed Access Server on Amazon Web Services (AWS) using Terraform, spinning it up via an Amazon Machine Image (AMI) in their virtual private cloud (VPC). From there:
- Remote team members now connect to the VPN and gain access to internal resources inside the VPC.
- Public access to cloud services is eliminated, reducing exposure to internet-based threats.
- Two-factor authentication (2FA) is enabled for all clients and employees, providing an added layer of protection beyond passwords.
With 2FA in place, attackers have a much harder time impersonating users — even if credentials are compromised. Managing access rights and enforcing authentication policies became practical and consistent rather than a manual afterthought.
The result: secure, simple, and reliable access
Since deploying Access Server:
-
Remote employees enjoy a reliable way to access internal systems without cumbersome credentials.
-
The security team has stronger assurance that the people connecting are who they say they are.
-
Cloud services within the VPC are protected without needing public endpoints.
-
Endpoints are protected with 2FA for both clients and employees, reducing risk of unauthorized access.
—“What I most like about OpenVPN is that it’s easy to set up and use, and we can easily enable 2FA for all of our clients and employees. If you need a simple and secure VPN, you should use OpenVPN.”
