The challenge: scaling secure access for a growing remote workforce
The company needed to provide employees with secure access over the public internet to internal systems and applications. Initially, the security team managed this access by allowlisting employee IP addresses.
While workable for a small number of users, this process became increasingly difficult as the workforce expanded. Remote employees frequently changed networks — working from home, coworking spaces, or while traveling — which meant their IP addresses changed often.
Managing these exceptions became time-consuming for administrators and created friction for employees trying to access the resources they needed.
To support a growing distributed workforce, the company needed a solution that would:

The solution: secure VPN access deployed in AWS
To solve these challenges, the company deployed Access Server to provide secure VPN connectivity for its remote workforce.
Using the Amazon Machine Image (AMI), the team quickly deployed Access Server within the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) that hosts their internal systems.
Once deployed, administrators configured AWS Security Groups to restrict incoming traffic to internal servers so that privileged ports could only be accessed through the Access Server instance. This architecture created a secure gateway between remote employees and the company’s private infrastructure.
To streamline authentication, the team integrated Access Server with its identity directory via RADIUS. They also implemented multi-factor authentication (MFA) by connecting their MFA provider through the same RADIUS integration, adding an additional layer of security for privileged access.
With this setup, employees can securely connect to internal applications from anywhere while administrators maintain centralized control over access.

After implementing Access Server, the company eliminated the need to manage cumbersome IP allowlists. Instead, employees authenticate securely and connect through the VPN gateway to reach internal resources.
